Everything Under the Sun: "The Blind Side"

"The Blind Side" - Family Movie with Strong Message
of Christian Faith

One morning in late November, I watched Joni Lamb on Daystar TV featuring interviews with the stars and producers of the film, "The Blind Side", which claimed would be a great family movie to watch during Thanksgiving holidays. This made me curious why a film as this would be of interest to a Christian network. And so I watched.

At the beginning of the film, football was featured revealing the highest-paid athlete in a football field is the quarterback and the second highest-paid athlete is the left tackle because his job is to protect the quarterback's blind side, hence, the title.
But the film is actually about a huge, tall, African-American teenager, Michael Oher--poor and undereducated, born to a crack addict and whose father was murdered, living in the couch of a good-hearted neighbor--his life turned around because, I believe, God was with him. Defended by a coach who reiterated the word 'Christian' and telling the school board, "We either take this word seriously or remove the word", Michael Oher was accepted to Wingate Christian Academy which has the slogan "With men this is possible, but with God all things are possible". Hmmm, that is probably why this film is of interest to Daystar. But, there's more.

One night, a wealthy white family chanced upon Michael walking in the street and ended up being part of the Tuohy family who understood him, provided for him and even hired a tutor for his education. The family matriarch played by Sandra Bullock became the key person in the film who embraced him as a son, gave him encouragement and through her love and example, made her entire family love Michael as a member of this Christian family. Of course, Michael became a football player, a left tackle, and now plays with the Ravens. Yes, this film is based on a true story.

By the way, the film took the number one spot at the box office in the U.S. from "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" during the first week of December.
