Food and Health: Frozen Yogurt-- Tasty and Healthy

Frozen Yogurt--Tasty and Healthy

I love the taste of yogurt even during that time that they don't sell it frozen yet. Nowadays, frozen yogurts are great substitutes for ice-cream or dessert, not only because they taste good, but they are good for our health. In fact, according to Dr. Willie T. Ong, in his article "Yogurt for Health? Yo!" in The Philippine Star's Health and Family section March 2 issue, yogurt is one of the world's healthiest foods and also regarded as a complete food. Why is that?

According to Dr. Ong, yogurt is made from fermented milk and has the perfect combination of proteins, carbohydrates and fats and also contains calcium for our bones, potassium for the muscles, and Vitamin B for the nerves. Not only these, but yogurt also contains 'probiotics' which are good bacteria that our body needs which can reduce the incidence of diarrhea and help strengthen our immune system. In addition, a small cup of yogurt contains only about 70 calories and therefore, can help those who want to lose weight.

Well, here in the Philippines, having yogurt for snack or dessert has become a bit of a fad. We see frozen yogurt stalls everywhere, different brands, different toppings, different containers. The toppings are the ones to watch out for because they are the ones with high-calorie contents. Examples of rich toppings are my favorites at White Hat, syrupy cherries and brownies. The yogurt is 98% fat-free and contains a bit more than 70 calories, but the toppings are full of sugar and carbohydrates. But they have other toppings which are healthy, like fresh fruits and granola. Other frozen yogurt brands have multi-colored sprinkles, chocolate chips, marshmallows which kids love.

So, do you want to be healthy? Eat yogurt today!
