The Model Prayer

The Model Prayer

In Matthew 6: 9-13, Jesus taught us how to pray. He showed His disciples that this kind of prayer is most effective. We are to follow this pattern when we pray. Allow me to explain why.

"In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name  -- Our prayer should always begin with praise. We praise our God because He is worthy to be magnified and praised. God inhabits the praises of His people which means He loves our praises and listens intently.

Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. -- 1 John 5: 14 says, 'Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask according to His will, He hears us.' The Bible tells us that it is God's will for us to become prosperous, to be in good health, to have a good and peaceful life.

Give us this day our daily bread -- This portion of the prayer is our petition. Again, Jesus said, 'Ask and you shall receive; seek and you shall find'. We need to ask what we need; although God already knows what we need but we need to ask.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors -- Forgiveness is essential to answered prayers because unforgiveness is a burden that blocks our blessings. As we have been forgiven through the blood of Christ, therefore, we must also forgive others.

And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one -- God does not lead us into temptation but it is already around us. We ask God for the strength and endurance to repel temptations and the Holy Spirit will do His part to warn us or to convict us. However, it is still our decision to choose right from wrong, good or evil.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen" -- Prayer ends with praise because this is an expression of your faith that whatever you ask it is already given you. The best expression of faith and praise is thanksgiving because you are already thanking Him even if you do not see the blessing yet.

Now the next verse also is an important component of our prayer and assures us that whatever we ask will be given us.

John 16: 23-24 (Jesus is talking here)  " ....Most assuredly I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full."
